Welcome to 14th and Colorado! They say to write what you know. So this newsletter will focus on the Texas Supreme Court and other appellate courts in Texas (and occasionally beyond), particularly the newly-created Fifteenth Court. The name, like many legal blogs and newsletters in the appellate world, comes from the building it focuses on. The Texas Supreme Court can be found at the cross streets of 14th and Colorado in Austin.
I’ll be writing about the courts’ major cases, including both high-profile cases that are sure to grab the attention of popular media and the public, and interesting legal issues that are sure to draw, maybe even require, the attention of Texas appellate nerds like me. I’ll also be digging into some of the Texas Supreme Court’s recent big decisions. Because of the nature of this newsletter, it may not be every week. But you can expect to hear from me with reasonable frequency.
A little about me: I’m an appellate lawyer in private practice in Dallas. I did two tours through the Texas Supreme Court—first as a law clerk for Justice Brett Busby and more recently (ending a few days before this post) as a staff attorney for Justice Evan Young. Between those adventures I clerked for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and did critical motions, appeals, and some advisory work at a large law firm in Dallas.
Before I became a lawyer, I spent several years as a tenure-track professor of criminal justice at TCU and received my Ph.D. in Criminology, Law and Society from the University of California—Irvine. I’ve published extensively on the intersection of law and technology, jury decision making, and insurance law.
When I’m not working, I spend my time with my wife, daughter, and two crazy doodles. Occasionally, you’ll find me on the golf course. I hope you enjoy the newsletter. Please reach out any time with questions or interesting things you’d like to discuss.
Adam
